    GREAT BASIC REFERENCE, May 8, 2002

    If you are a geodesy expert looking for a mathematical treatment of GPS theory, look elsewhere (there are several good books). If you are looking for a good collegiate-level descriptive text, this is a great choice. Clear, concise, and with all the latest info including WAAS, RTK, and similar topics. Reviewed for content by Dr. Dave Wells and written by an expert in the field, this is a super reference.

    Got this to supplement pilot training on GPS. Provides lots of information not found in “basic” GPS books without all of the techno-bable (well there is a little, but not too much).

    Non mathematical desription of GPS but misses some important elements, September 7, 2012

    Professor El-Rabbany has done a good job of keeping math out of his discussion of GPS but this comes at the cost of of a poor explanation of several important facets of GPS. He includes a very detailed description of the GPS signals but skims over the section where pseudorange is determined by figuring out what time offset is required to align the output of a pseudorandom number generator in the GPS device with the output produced and generated by the satellite (at least, that’s what I think is going on; I had to fill in some of the details myself).

    A second issue is the explanation of how more precise positioning can be achieved by analysis of the carrier signal from the satellites. This depends heavily on the resolution of “initial integer cycle ambuguity parameters” so I was very much looking forward to Chapter 6 where this was to be explained. Unfortunately, the explanation was very brief and relied heavily on assuming the reader was already familiar with Kalman filtering (which the sort of person reading a non mathematical introduction to GPS will not know anything about). I couldn’t follow the explanation so the substantial portion of the book that describes techniques dependent on this process remains poorly understood.

    There certainly is a need for this sort of book and I would hope that there will be a 3rd edition where these glaring omissions are addressed.
